The drawings in Family Mycelium explore themes of connection, growth, and familial bonds through the delicate and organic forms of mushrooms. Each piece, rendered in graphite and charcoal powder and measuring 3.5 x 2.5 inches, depicts mushrooms that I have encountered and photographed while on walks with my mother. These shared moments of observation and collection have become rituals of connection, blending the natural world with the intimacy of parental bonding. Mushrooms, with their intricate networks of mycelium beneath the surface, serve as metaphors for family structures—both visible and unseen. Just as mycelium connects and sustains life within an ecosystem, family roots, constellations, and trees form an interwoven network of support, memory, and legacy. These drawings reference not only the physical specimens but also the deeper ties between my mother and me, which are mirrored in the relationships and patterns that shape familial bonds over generations.
