Sensory Imprints: The Walls of 304

Memories are made entirely of recollections we have of specific events according to our five senses. Even one sense, absent from all of the others, has the ability to form and link to a core memory; the tension of rushing water, the sound of rain against a glass window, or the sensation of coarse dirt or polished floorboards beneath your bare feet. Recreating memories using only sight has proven to be quite a difficult task for me. Working within this boundary allows for gaps and inconsistencies when communicating a memory that may be well-rounded within the mind but seem vague when translated in the form of a drawing on paper. However, the challenge also opens the door to develop an entirely new way to understand and experience a specific emotion or sensation. Although most of my individual drawings are partially based on photographs that I have taken and collected over the years, I allow myself to modify the original compositions or abandon them entirely in order to ensure that the final product does not function only within the constraints of the reference photo. For this section of my body of work, I experimented with constructing compositions of various textures entirely from memory and imagination while placing an emphasis on vivid sensory details that are often overlooked during daily life but are stored by the mind with intense clarity.
